In 1898 the Star cycle company began making cars. These early Stars were a copy of the 3.5 hp Benz. Under the direction of Edward Lisle they began to produce cars to their own design and, towards the end of 1904, the company decided to build a car capable of taking part in the 1905 Gordon Bennett races.
